Term: ASP.NET
ASP.NET is a Microsoft technology that allows individuals to create sophisticated websites. Within ASP.NET one can program in Visual Basic (VB.NET) C (C#). Some individuals use the term .NET to refer to the technology. In order to host a website that has been programmed in .NET, the operating system on the server must be Microsoft, such as Microsoft Server 2008. It cannot be hosted on a unix or linux server. The competing unix and linux programming environment is PHP. PHP is what is called an "Open Source", because support and development is handled by individuals who share their knowledge and programs with others - usually at no charge, or at very little charge. By contrast, ASP.NET is proprietory. While Microsoft does not charge for the ASP.NET environment, it does charge for the operating systems needed to turn .NET as well as for tools which help in the development of new applications. For support and other reasons, we have decided to be an ASP.NET developer. However, our applications can interface with back office applications running on any platform through development of data transfer strategies and programs. Additional related terms:
