The first step in developing a business web presence is to register a domain name that will be appropriate for your web objective. The next step is to decide upon the company that will provide business web hosting.
In the beginning, when your web traffic is small and the website is not mission critical for your business operations, you may choose a web hosting company that provides services at the lowest possible cost. There are many, many companies that offer business web hosting at fees that are under $10 per month. However, in business there is "no free lunch". When you choose a partner, you have to consider how much support a web hosting company can provide when their revenue is under $10 per month. In some cases, we are seeing that website hosting companies are not generating enough revenue, their business was not sustainable. In our part of the country we just had a service company go out of business abruptly by sending out an e-mail to all its customers to announce its demise.
When you want to select a partner you need to ask whether they can provide the infrastructure that is adequate. Depending upon your application you may need to examine the redundancy they have in their data center in terms of electric power and internet backbone providers. You may need to understand whether their servers use RAID technology. You may need to know what support coverage is provided - normal business hours or 24 x 7. You may need to know the quality of the support. In some cases you may need to know their back-up policies and how they monitor the system up-time.
As your business becomes more dependent upon your website, it will become increasingly important to partner with a company that can provide the correct technology to meet your business objectives.
