Cut and paste

Term: Cut and paste

A keyboard operation that takes text from one area of a document and puts the same information in another part of the same document, or in another document.

The first step to complete this process is to highlight the text and/or images it is desired to move, by either dragging the mouse over the area it is desired to move or by using the "Select All" command from the drop-down menu.

The second step is to mark let the computer application know that the highlighted text should be electronically "cut" by using the "Cut" command, which can usually be accessed by using the other button on the mouse (right for Windows) to reveal a menu that includes the "cut" option.

The third step is to define the location where it is desired to move the text. The mouse is moved to the new location in the current or different file and then clicked.

The fourth and final step is to click the mouse button to reveal the menu to click on "paste" to insert the text and/or pictures in the new location. In some cases you would use the "paste special" option. This command allows you to do such things as pasting the new text with the font size and style that is in the new document rather than the source document.
