Data Backup

Term: Data Backup

A secondary copy of information. This can be stored in a variety of different ways, such as a thumb drive, server, CD, DVD, tape back-up.

The golden rule of backup is to back up as frequently as you do not mind loosing data and having to recreate the stored information.

The most important things with data backups are to ensure that they happen as automatically as possible and that you always have a second copy of critical information stored at a secure place that is in a different physical location from where the source data is stored. Sometimes we have come across organizations that store the backup on top of their computer. In the event of a fire or theft, everything is lost.

Sometimes we have helped organizations establish a systematic approach to having copies of critical information picked up from their place of business and stored in a secure off site location.

For organizations that perform frequent web page edits, such as by using the contribute content management tool, we provide scheduled backup of their entire website.

When an organization regularly uses the web to capture information in a database, we have provided daily backup of data files.

The bottom line is that regular data backup is critical to ensure that when the unexpected happens the information can be recreated on new or repaired computer equipment.
