Term: Data Dictionary
Information on the structure of a particular datafile. For example, the defintion may say that each "row" or "record" in the file contains two "fields": a first name that is always a character string and cannot be longer than 15 characters long. The second "field" is the last name, that must also be characters and cannot be longer than 18 characters.
